Jean Malpas, LMHC, LMFT, is a faculty member of the Ackerman Institute for the Family and a psychotherapist in private practice in New York City. For the past 10 years, Jean has provided psychotherapy to individuals, couples, families and groups. His expertise includes family and relationship issues, substance abuse and recovery, sexual and gender identity, depression, anxiety, chronic illness and cultural adjustment. In addition to teaching family therapy at the Ackerman Institute, Jean has presented nationally and internationally on addiction counseling, couples therapy, gender and sexuality. His innovations have been published in professional books and journals as well as magazines and blogs in the U.S., Europe and Canada. Jean Malpas was trained by leading psychologists and family therapists in Belgium, France and the United States. After graduating from Brussels University with a master’s degree in clinical psychology and psychotherapy, he attended NYU’s Psychology Department on the prestigious Belgian American Educational Foundation Scholarship. He completed his post-graduate training at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and is currently pursuing a certification in systems-centered group therapy at the Systems-Centered Training & Research Institute.

Jean has been an Early Career Member of AFTA since 2006. Together with the Next Generation Initiative Task Force and the Early Career Membership Committee, Jean has been involved in connecting the younger members of AFTA with one another and developing initiatives targeting early career decisions and resources, such as this year's first AFTA Leadership Training Interest Group. Jean has also been a member of AFTA's Membership Committee and LGBTQ Network.
