Martha Adams Sullivan, DSW

Dr. Martha Adams Sullivan has over twenty-five years of clinical and managerial experience in behavioral health and social services. Devoted to the development of quality mental health and chemical dependency services for underserved and minority populations, Dr. Sullivan has focused her work on behavioral health care for the elderly, women, people of color, and those who are homeless. While serving as Deputy Commissioner, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Division of Mental Hygiene, Dr. Sullivan provided leadership for the Bureau of Health Promotion and Chemical Dependency and the Bureau of Community Liaison and Training.
Prior to her government service, Dr. Sullivan served as Director of Behavioral Health (formerly known as the Department of Psychiatry) of the Gouverneur Diagnostic and Treatment Center. There she also developed several clinical programs including the Center for Older Adults and Their Families, and the Comprehensive Women’s Program. Currently, Dr. Sullivan provides executive consulting services for non-profit social service, aging, and behavioral health organizations. Dr. Sullivan earned her doctorate and master’s degrees at the CUNY Graduate Center and the Hunter College School of Social Work where she is currently an adjunct faculty member.
Dr. Sullivan has served on AFTA's Nominations and Family Policy Committees, moderating Family Policy Forums, and as the organizer or co-facilitator of the Aging, Health, and Mental Health Disparities, and Religion/Spirituality Interest Groups. She is co-organizer of the Threaded Conversations Project.
