(AFTA MEMBERS AND INVITED GUESTS ONLY)
The Program Book will be sent to all members in April
and can be downloaded below.
Our Annual Meeting will be held in Boulder, Colorado, in the beautiful foothills of
the Rocky Mountains. (See attachments below).
We urge you to attend and we invite you to participate.
The theme is Public Issues, Private Lives. We live in difficult times. They are most
difficult for the most vulnerable of us. The focus of the plenaries is on innovative
approaches to therapy with vulnerable populations. We invite you to come to the meeting
and tell us about the challenges and the successes in the work you are doing to help
families and larger systems during these times.
Our keynote speaker is Spero Manson, a Pembina Chippewa cultural anthropologist, who
directs the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health in the Colorado School
of Public Health; he will speak on pioneering approaches to outreach and therapy with
Native Americans.
There will be dozens of smaller interest and discussion groups planned for the meeting, as
well as three plenaries:
• Mental Health Disparities and Cultural issues
Margarita Alegria researches cultural barriers to Latino mental health.
William Turner studies African American families and family therapy and worked
with President Barack Obama when he was a senator, from 2007-2008.
Douglas Novins works with Native American youth and communities.
• Vulnerable Youth and Resilience
Michael Ungar researches what constitutes resilience with at risk youth.
Chris Behan works with the foster care system.
Rebecca Harvey co-authored Nurturing Queer Youth.
• Innovations in Couples Therapy
Mona Fishbane integrates ideas from neuroscience and attachment theory with
systems’ approaches to couples.
Jill Freedman and Gene Combs are internationally renowned teachers of Narrative
Therapy approaches to couples.
Jean Malpas writes about working with LGBTQ couples.
We are pleased to announce that we will be again applying for hours of Continuing
Education units for all components of the Meeting (i.e., Interest Groups, Brief
Presentations, Plenary Sessions).
Boulder, Colorado
Boulder is the home of the University of Colorado, a beautiful college town in the
foothills of the Rocky Mountains. We will be staying at the Millenum Hotel in downtown
Boulder. There are beautiful walking trails and vistas near the city. Visit the website
http://www.bouldercoloradousa.com/things-to-do/, for pictures and ideas about how to
make this a vacation get-away for you and your family. We are pleased to announce that
