AFTA STATEMENT ON ICE RAIDS

February 14, 2017

The American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA) stands in absolute opposition to the recent raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement over this past weekend.

These raids, in Atlanta, New York City, Los Angeles, and in the states of Texas, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, and Virginia, took place in homes and the workplace. Children watched in horror as they saw their mothers, fathers, family members carted away.

There is a collective trauma being experienced all over the country, and the president’s call for expanded deportation of immigrants and refugees with and without convictions is an assault on American values.

AFTA is an organization of family therapists, researchers and educators from around the world, we understand this action's traumatic consequences for family life. Children cannot succeed in school when anxious about their parents. Mothers and fathers cannot succeed at work when worried about their safety and what will happen to their children if they are detained and deported.

AFTA stands in solidarity with families, immigrants, refugees, and communities, directly and indirectly impacted by this directive. The deportation of hard working people who have been in this country for years, raising their families and contributing to their communities does not make the country safe. It only contributes to the breakdown of our country’s moral fiber.

We will work with other organizations to ensure families receive the support they need as they struggle with the ramifications of these actions.

We ask all AFTA members to call their senators, congressmen and the White House to strongly and loudly express outrage, letting this administration know that this directive is antithetical of American values.
